How You’ll Make an Impact:

The Lead Data Engineering Architect is a servant leader, practitioner, and coach supporting the end-to-end delivery & operations of Carter’s Data & Analytics capabilities. Their scope spans Data Engineering across all business segments.

Partnering with business, operations, segment IT, QA, and data steward stakeholders, this leader defines and delivers data solutions integral to our customers and global business. Successful candidates must be self-driven and organized, dynamic, curious, passionate, and effective influencer who creates trust. This person is a thought leader in a multicultural, global team building quality, innovative, and resilient data solutions at scale.

This leader takes a hands-on, lead-from-the-front approach to planning, communicating, coordinating, and executing the activities involved, and is accountable for the outcomes of the technical solutions delivered under their oversight.

While Remote, this role requires the candidate to live in the United States, and operates on Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Architecture & Engineering (60%)

  • Champion the optimization of ELT/ EDW & Data Lake infrastructure and build of to-be Lakehouse architecture.

  • Partnering with Development, oversee creation of high-quality, maintainable code / assets including ETL, Stored Procedures, Data Lake / Lake House Ingestions, and related integrations.

  • Evolve the platform architecture (code, configuration, tools, data structure, etc.) by setting and overseeing delivery imperatives and approaches during annual, quarterly, and sprint-level planning.

  • Plan and execute efforts to raise platform stability, performance, data quality, lineage, and reduce technical debt.

  • Establish and foster industry cloud and analytics research and benchmarking relationships and partnerships to leverage industry and technology knowledge and advancements.

  • Oversee across the portfolio all design/code reviews, improving code consistency, quality, and the team's ability to develop using the latest platform features/coding standards.

  • Set and oversee code, configuration, and process guardrails for effective development & deployment.

  • Partner with peer leaders to establish core architectural capabilities, defining where & how they should be leveraged, and how to migrate the architecture over time.

  • Partner with Carters' Architectural community to inform and advise technical strategy & its implementation.

Solution Delivery & Operational Support (40%)

  • Partner with business & IT to define appropriate solutions to requirements, balancing speed & robustness.

  • Lead the team through all phases of solutions, from ideation to post-implementation stabilization.

  • Be a trusted liaison to stakeholders, applying deep knowledge of business issues, technology, processes, and data.

  • Ensure code and assets are maintained; troubleshoot data-related bugs within a complex, global code base.

  • Act as Tier 3 support to triage & resolve issues; proactively prevent/eliminate issues at code & configuration level.

  • Ensure compliance with established policies and standards such as Change & Incident Management, Security.

  • Ensure proper configuration & tuning of data platforms & related code/software bundles & data integrations.

Must-Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technology or business-related area is preferred.

  • 3+ years’ experience leading large technology operations ($1M+ annual spend) involving data, required.

  • Experience building impactful technology strategies and roadmaps across multiple solutions is required.

  • 7+ years’ experience in software development using Agile (Scrum and/or Kanban)

  • 5+ years’ experience in delivering consumer or business-to-business data solutions

  • 3+ years’ experience integrating Cloud Data Platforms into large production environments

  • 7+ years' experience building & running E solutions (e.g. Informatica, dbt, Fivetran, Alteryx, AWS Glue)

  • 7+ years' experience building & running large-scale Data Warehouses (e.g. Amazon Redshift, Snowflake)

  • 5+ years' experience in data modeling/data architecture for Business Intelligence & analytics use case

  • Able to deal with ambiguity, maintain composure and negotiate solutions in challenging, stressful situations.

  • Ability to solve complex problems where in-depth analysis and evaluation of various factors is required.

  • Experience leading outcomes; effective at coaching & advocating for others

  • Patience, persistence, and support in mentoring team members in building well-crafted, client-focused solutions

  • Sound judgment & critical thinking, quickly analyzing situations, and leading teams to find solutions.

  • Project management experience: organization, time, budgeting, scheduling, prioritization, risk & issue management.

  • Data Pipelines/Streams building (e.g. Kafka), Serverless computing (e.g. Lambda)

  • Stored Procedures, ETL flows / scripting, SQL

  • High-volume data processing and related tuning, monitoring, and resiliency techniques

  • Migrating legacy data architectures to future state architectures

  • Architecture & design, systems analysis, SDLC & Agile methodologies

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Enterprise & Solution Architecture experience

  • AWS (Redshift, Dynamo, S3, EMR, RDS) or similar Cloud Platforms (GCP, Azure)

  • Data Modeling concepts & tools (e.g. Embarcadero, Erwin, PowerDesigner)
